Along the lines of Pol Rogers gesture upon the death of their most famous customer , Winston Churchill- they put a black ring around the neck of the bottle which is still there today - we shall have an abbreviated report this week in light of the circumstances of Saturday( though not as serious) and that not much amusing occurred.
A rather slovenly approach to the game was noted , with players ambling to the dugout 10/15min late while the 3’s were executing routines like a team of highly drilled synchronised swimmers to some rather dubious ghetto blaster tunes.
The mood was lightened somewhat by Vaughn and son arriving as we were to start having gone to the Triangle- how can you soar like an eagle ……….?
This week will see a marked improvement in our approach!
It was an interesting start with the 3”s doing a half court press, it was only a short while before the two older and should be wiser heads coughed up possession to allow the them to transfer to attack.
Thereafter they dominated the midfield and attacked successfully down our right flank creating numerous chances and it was only the guile of and bravery of Chris that managed to keep a clean sheet, combined with a touch of Aussie sledging.
The temperature of the match rose considerably after a few poor but not malicious tackles, perhaps due more to incompetence . The 3’s eventually converted the pressure into a well taken goal followed reasonably quickly thereafter by a rather scrappy and poorly defended goal, going into half time two nil up and looking in control , with the 4’s forwards working hard but finding constructive possession difficult , with only a couple of opportunities. An inspired tactical positional change and substitution lead to 3’s is getting back into the game in the second half and frustrating the opposition midfield and forward line. Thereafter followed the altercation which resulted in 3 yellow cards ( 1 for the 4’s ), upon both teams returning to full strength ,we were galvanised by Harry Main who has been pushed in to the forward line , with a stunning work rate and skill we were inspired to raise our game to dominate the last quarter ( super ball movement). Our pressure finally rewarded with fine finish by El Zorro sans mask. With everybody giving all and not giving up , the second half belonged to the 4’s and we walked off proud 2-1 losers.
There is no doubt that the quality in the 3’s team will stand them in good stead for their deserved promotion push , we should be encouraged by our self belief and fighting spirit when playing the team second in the league.
Well played all in a tough game.
We cannot pretend last weeks incident did not take place , it has been dealt with swiftly so that we can all move on,
Let us take the positives from this game and move them onto Saturday.
